So clever !

Kawasaki disease (KD), also known as Kawasaki syndrome, is a serious illness characterized by inflammation of blood vessels throughout the body that primarily affects young children and infants. A majority of the children develop heart disease involving the coronary arteries. My brother is one of them. Tomorrow is KD Awareness Day. Please wear red to raise awareness. It is a very rare disease and not many people know this.

At 20 months old, Johnny developed a persistent fever and what I thought was conjunctivitis. After two days of treating his eyes with pink eye drops, I realized that there was not the usual discharge that accompanies pink eye. With each day, my brother became more irritable, he ate less and had diarrhea, his mouth was extremely red and he had sporadic bumps on his body and light peeling of his fingertips and toe tips. All of these symptoms developed and worsened within 1 weeks’ time. On Monday morning, we visited our new pediatrician who recognized his symptoms immediately. Johnny’s doctor had seen one single case of this disease that now plagued my son during her residency 20 some odd years earlier. We were sent to the hospital where he was admitted and met by three teams of doctors: Pediatrics, Infectious Disease, and Cardiology. Shortly after arrival, the invasive testing began, tests to rule out any other illnesses to help diagnose this rare disease that his pediatrician suspected BUT had no blood test to diagnose. It was a process of elimination of other potential sicknesses.  Thankfully before a spinal tap was performed, the Cardiologist ordered an EKG and ECHO, as KD is known to cause inflammation of the heart vessels in about 20% of patients. Sadly, my little brother, now 5, is now part of that percentage. It’s been a long, tough road, one that will not end for his entire life. He will always be on blood thinners, will not be able to participate in sports. He gets tired very easily as well as getting sick.
